Working in today's hotels can be more diverse than you can possibly imagine. "Pubs" range from your traditional Aussie pub, large or small, renovated inner city establishments, modern, replica-type ( like Kitty O'Shea's ) to open beachside or waterside types ( Watson's Bay / Newport Arms ), cool eclectic bars hidden from the mainstream, cosy suburban pubs ( The River Oaks Balmain ) to the ultra sleek cocktail lounge bars ( Soho and Manly's Aqua Bar ).

Pubs offer as much diversity as restaurants. Colours, service styles, international influences and foods offered only start the list.

Pubs ( hotels ) differ mainly from Clubs ( Leagues, Bowls, Community, Golf etc ) in their culture. Clubs offer a systemised structure more than pubs. Their systems dominate, whilst pubs have less structure and rely more on individual delivery of service and standards. An example of this is walking into a venue and asking "what entertainment is on tonight?".

In a Club, you are most likely, at the front sign-in desk, to be pointed to a wall of entertainment posters or notices. In a hotel, the first person you see who works there is at the bar and able to tell you what's on. ( Club staff rely on the system to provide the answer, whereas the Hotel employee is relied upon to know it and tell you - as most pubs don't have a big support system to rely on. )

Neither method is wrong, but generally Clubs have a larger management (and director) team and are more organised. Hotels have fewer staff and hence a smaller, more personally involved management team.

So, what suits you best? Are you more outgoing and independent? Choose a pub. Particularly, if personal service and interaction with patrons really drives you - hotels are your best bet. If you take direction well and rely on a solid structure for work processes, then you may be best choosing a Club.

Other factors in considering a job in a pub may include :

Being more flexible in your shifts due to rostering constraints.
More last minute call-ins to work ( due to smaller available workforce )
You may need to be more multi-skilled ( perform greater variety of tasks )
Hours of opening may be longer than Clubs.
Suburban pubs close earlier than many other bars.
You are expected to be able to deal with all types of customers.
No matter what your role - you will always be in the front line for service
Live locally as you possible can to ensure you are able to be there on time
